Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Authorship: If a submission has more than one author, the authors should be listed in order of degree of contribution to the submission, i.e., the first-listed author is the one who contributed most. And all the listed authors must have contributed significantly to the authoring of the article.

Originality: Each submission to AJIC is received with the understanding that its contents are original, unpublished material; that the submission is not being simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere; and that the submission is not a direct copy of material submitted as part of a Master’s or PhD thesis or dissertation. Translated material that has not been published in English will be considered. The AJIC editorial team reserves the right to edit or otherwise alter contributions, both before and after internal and/or external peer review, with authors given the opportunity to review and accept/reject edits and alterations. 

Protection of personal information: Submissions to AJIC that draw on research with human subjects are received with the understanding that research subjects' personal information was managed in accordance with laws and regulations on protection of personal information, e.g., research conducted in South Africa must comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Adapted versions: Where a submission is an adapted (e.g., revised, updated, redacted) version of a previously published work, the author(s) must specify this at the time of submission.

Plagiarism: All AJIC submissions are screened for plagiarism via the online Turnitin detection service. AJIC will reject any submission found to contain clear evidence of plagiarism, and future submissions will not be considered from the author(s) of such a submission.

Types of Submissions: AJIC will consider the following types of submissions for publication:

1. Research Articles
These are submissions (max. 8,000 words, including References section) that present research findings from, inter alia, empirical data collection, doctrinal analysis data collection, and/or conceptual exploration. 

2. Review Articles
These are submissions (max. 6,000 words, including References section) that provide, inter alia, a systematic review, a thematic review, a critical topical review, or a critical literature review.

3. Critical Interventions
These are submissions (max. 3,000 words, including References section) that provide reasoned comment and argument on relevant topics.

4. Publication Reviews
These are submissions (max. 2,000 words, including References section) that provide reviews of, inter alia, books, journal articles, reports, research reports, research papers.

5. Correspondence
These are submissions (max. 1,000 words) that provide rejoinders to, or correspondence related to, published AJIC articles.

6. News, Obituaries, Guest Editor Introductions
(max. 1,000 words)

Selection and refereeing:

  • Research Articles provisionally selected for publication by the Corresponding Editor—with assistance where necessary from internal reviewers (i.e., the Publishing Editor and members of the Editorial Advisory Board)—are peer-reviewed “double-blind” by one or more referees selected by the Corresponding Editor from among subject matter experts. Final selection for publication is contingent upon referee approval and author implementation of any changes requested by the referee(s).
  • Review Articles and Critical Interventions provisionally selected for publication by the Corresponding Editor are peer-reviewed by at least one internal reviewer. Final selection for publication is contingent upon reviewer approval and author implementation of any changes requested by the reviewer(s).
  • All short contributions (Publication Reviews, Correspondence, News, Obituaries, Guest Editor Introductions) provisionally selected for publication by the Corresponding Editor are peer-reviewed by at least one internal reviewer. Final selection for publication is contingent upon reviewer approval and author implementation of any changes requested by the reviewer(s).

Presentation:

Format: All submissions  should  be in 12‐point Times New Roman font,  with single line-spacing that is left- and right-justified,  in an MS Word file (or  compatible  open  source  format) with minimal formatting.

First page: The first page of the submission should contain:

  • submission title
  • corresponding author’s name, title, organisational affiliation, postal address, email address, and telephone number
  • (where appicable) names, titles and organisation affiliations of co‐authors
  • an Abstract not exceeding 200 words in length
  • Keywords
  • (where appicable) Acknowledgements, including acknowledgement of any funding received for the research, and any potential conflict(s) of interest on the part of any of the authors.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively, in decimal numerals (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), with the numbers followed by headings.

Figures: All graphs, diagrams, drawings and photographs should be referred to as figures, should be provided in the body of the submission in high-resolution .jpeg file format, and should be numbered consecutively in decimal numerals (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), with the numbers followed by headings.

Footnotes: Footnotes (NOT end notes) should be used ONLY to provide supplementary information, NOT to provide full citations for sources.

Citations for sources: Citations of primary and secondary sources referred to in the article should be provided in APA citation style, i.e., via,

  • in-text bracketed (author, year) citations, with page numbers for direct quotations, and with this same style used to cite sources mentioned in footnotes; and
  • a concluding References section containing full citations for ONLY the sources cited in the text and footnotes, arranged in alphabetical order and following APA full-citation style conventions for punctuation, italicisation, upper-casing, etc.

African/UK English spellings: Submissions must use African/UK (NOT American) English spellings, e.g., programme NOT program; labour NOT labor; organisation NOT organization; analyse NOT analyze, etc.
