Call for papers 2026

Herewith, the notice calling for papers for The Independent Journal of Teaching and Learning (IJTL). This a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year in May and November. The IJTL appears on the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET’s) approved list of South African accredited journals; Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and SCIELO SA. Please make this call for papers widely available to any interested parties.

Due to the increase in high-quality papers submitted, we will not be able to publish more than one article per person in a three-year cycle.

The IJTL is intended to be a resource for education practitioners and researchers as it aims to provide useful, research-based resources and to provide a scholarly forum for academics and education practitioners to share in research on educational practices and teaching and learning at various levels.

The following contributions are considered for publication:

  • Theoretical articles
  • Research-based empirical, reflective or synoptic articles that would be of interest to education practitioners
  • Review articles that critically examine research carried out in a specific field
  • Discussion or advocacy papers
  • Book reviews that comprise a clear and concise evaluation of recently published books.

 Submissions will

  • open on 18 June 2025 at 08:00 CAT
  • close on 18 August 2025 at 17:00 CAT

 Each submission must include:

  1. Manuscript must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.docx) format and adhere to the styleguide requiremetns of the IJTL as noted on the website (https://journals.assaf.org.za/index.php/ijtl/about/submissions)
  2. The IJTL Confirmation of Submission for Review signed by each author and submitted in PDF format.*
  3. A fully marked-up similarity report from software such as Turnitin, iThenticate or SafeAssign.
  4. Author biography (approximately 50 words), detailed affiliation including department; ORCID and contact information submitted in Microsoft Word (.docx) format.
  5. A language editing report
  6. Referencing and citations must apply the APA 7th Edition.

Authors can submit the required documents via the IJTL’s website while the call for papers is open. Late submissions or submissions via email will not be considered. Authors may only make one submission during the call for papers, even if they are the co-author of a paper.

Articles must be aligned to IJTL’s scope and purpose (see submission guidelines on the website), and The IJTL’s technical specifications and ethics guidelines must be adhered to.
